FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Since I am celebrating Mass at the Scouts’ Day, please welcome Fr. Ted Marszal, who will celebrate our Sunday Mass today.
(2) This week on September 6, we are celebrating the 98th anniversary of the dedication of our church building. This day is a solemnity for us and will be liturgically observed.
Just as parents celebrate the births of their children each year, so Mother Church celebrates the dedications of her churches. It is a palpable sign of the growth of the Church throughout the world. Our faith is not something abstract. It is meant to be visible and lasting. When he dedicated a church sometime between the years 391 and 395, Saint Augustine, said,
…just as this building has been made for us to gather in physically, so that building which we ourselves are is being constructed for God to live in spiritually. “For the temple of God,” says the apostle, “which is what you are, is holy” (I Corinthians 3:17). [Saint Augustine of Hippo, Sermon 337, 2.]
Before this church building was dedicated, laborers first had to prepare and assemble bricks and even quarry rocks. Bricks had to be placed in the right spot and rocks hewn into shape. Everything had to be fitted together just right, having excesses taken away bit by bit. So it must be with us if we are to be fitted into the eternal dwelling of God. Here on earth, God, bit by bit, is shaping us into the mold of His Son Jesus Christ. Thus, at times it may hurt when He takes away what we do not need, when He purifies us through our faithfulness, trials and sufferings. Let us have courage to let God finish the begun work in us. (3) For those of you who were registered parishioners at St. Elizabeth of Hungary parish as of August 13, 2023, we will have a parish appreciation dinner on September 10 at St. Elizabeth. That day, we will have Mass at 11, after which we will gather downstairs for a meal. Please RSVP by September 5. A sign-up sheet is available at the doors of the St. Elizabeth Shrine, or you may call me at 216-965-0061 (St. Emeric rectory).
(4) Looking into the future, with the merger of the parishes and the shrine being established, it is possible to adjust our Mass schedule. At this time I am thinking of moving the Sunday 11:15AM Hungarian Mass back to 11AM. This would provide an extra time in case I preach too long J, and a suitable transition to our occasional events afterwards. I am also thinking of introducing a Sunday 9AM Mass in English. Not all our English-speaking people can come to 5PM on Saturday and the nearby churches, I noticed, do not have 9AM Mass time (only 8:30AM and 10AM). 5PM Mass on Saturday would remain as is, but on occasion (and depending on the attendance) it could be held at St. Elizabeth Shrine. These changes would come into effect on October 1st. Please let me know what you think. Thank you.
