FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) In today’s gospel, we hear a reference to the fourth watch of the night. It was at this time that Jesus walked on water as he approached His disciples in a boat on the Sea of Galilee. The fourth watch of the night is the final three-hour period of the night, traditionally running from 3:00 AM to 6:00 AM. This time division originated from Roman military practices, which split the night into four equal watches, replacing the earlier Hebrew three-watch system (evening, midnight, and morning). Thus, in the Roman time computing, the first watch ran from 6:00 PM (sunset) – 9:00 PM, the second watch lasted from 9:00 PM – 12:00 AM, the third watch was from 12:00 AM – 3:00 AM and the fourth watch was from 3:00 AM – 6:00 AM (sunrise).
It is interesting to see how Jesus comes to the help of His disciples only toward the end of the night. He had sent them to cross the lake even before the first watch of the night would begin. Moreover, when Jesus went up the mountain to pray, very likely, He had a good view of His disciples struggling against the strong wind all night. Yet, he waited until the very end. It must have been physically and mentally very exhausting for the disciples to fight all night, but they never gave up and Jesus showed up. In this image, the Christian spirituality sees a message.
When we struggle, we are not abandoned; God knows what is going on in our lives. He lets us fight and struggle until the very end for a reason. We do not always know exactly why, but we do know that these moments in life humble us and make us realize we are not gods, but rather completely depend on Him (in easy life it is easy to forget Jesus Christ). It is only when we realize this utter dependence on God, can we actually form the correct relationship with Him. God lets us struggle also so that we would strengthen our faith. The key to grow in our faith is perseverance for which the disciples who fought the wind and waves all night are an excellent example. God loves and rewards perseverance (as he did with the disciples by allowing them a glimpse into His Divinity – by walking on water in front of them). So let us persevere through the dark moments in our lives. Even the greatest hopelessness is no match for Jesus Christ.
(2) Because the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary this year falls on a Saturday, it is not a holy day of obligation.

Picnic food from 12:30-4PM: Hungarian goulash, Hungarian style sausage, Stuffed Cabbage, Tomato, pepper & onion stew (lecsó), lángos (elephant ear), cabbage & noodles, assorted pastries, and new this year: Palacsinta (Hungarian crepes) and Chimney cake; also available children menu: hotdogs, ice-cream). The traditional blessing of bread at 1PM, music throughout, dance presentation at 2PM, children’s activities… No need to RSVP.
