FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: Are you familiar with the seven stages of the married cold? This a husband’s reactions to his wife’s colds during seven years of marriage.

First year: “Sugar dumpling; I’m really worried about our baby girl. You’ve got a bad sniffle, and there’s no telling about these things with all the strep throat going around. I’m putting you in the hospital this afternoon for a general checkup, and a good rest.

Second year: “Listen, darling, I don’t like the sound of that cough, and I’ve called Doc Miller to rush over here. Now you go to bed and I will bring you your favorite food from Valentini’s restaurant.”

Third year: “Maybe you better lie down, honey. Nothing like a little rest when you feel lousy. I’ll make some food. Have we got any canned soup?”

Fourth year: “Now look, dear, be sensible. After you’ve fed the kids, and got the dishes done, and the floor finished, you better lie down.”

Fifth year: “Why don’t you take a couple of aspirin?”

Sixth year: “I wish you’d just gargle or something instead of sitting around barking like a seal all evening. I will sleep on the couch tonight.”

Seventh year: “For Pete’s sake, stop sneezing! Are you trying to give me pneumonia? You better sleep on the couch tonight.”

This Sunday we observe the World Marriage Day, which is part of a larger National Marriage Week (Feb. 7-14) initiative. Even though it seems to celebrate the institution of marriage that we all familiar with; nevertheless, it is needed, because we are prone to take marriage, each other, for granted. However, nothing is static in life. If we do not do anything, we are losing what we have. Marriage is a true vocation and must be embraced as such. By Jesus Christ it has been raised to the level of a Sacrament as it symbolizes and foreshadows the closeness of God to the redeemed mankind. In the Sacrament of Marriage, Christ offers his presence and graces so that a man and a woman advance on the path of holiness through the call to love one another. My prayers today are for all the married couples: may they put in constant effort into being the best and holiest husband, wife, father, and mother, pleasing God and giving witness of their commitment to the world.

PRAYER FOR MARRIED COUPLES: Almighty and eternal God, You blessed the union of married couples so that they might reflect the union of Christ with his Church: look with kindness on them. Renew their marriage covenant, increase your love in them, and strengthen their bond of peace so that, with their children, they may always rejoice in the gift of your blessing. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE 2023 CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL will take place next weekend (February 18-19) in our parish. The diocese is asking that we have an in-pew commitment process that weekend. This year’s appeal theme is “A time to heal. A time to help.” Your generous support will transform the lives of others, to offer dignity, possibilities and companionship to those who are most vulnerable.
