FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: In the Roman Catholic Church, the Transfiguration was once celebrated locally in various parts of the Catholic world on different days, including 6 August, but was not universally observed. In 1456, the Kingdom of Hungary repulsed an Ottoman invasion of the Balkans by breaking the siege of Belgrade. News of the victory arrived in Rome on August 6th. In thanksgiving of the victory, Pope Callixtus III elevated the Transfiguration to a Feast day that is to be universally celebrated in the entire Roman rite (along with the noonday bells).
At Transfiguration, the Lord Jesus reveals his divine glory to the apostles Peter, John and James. The Old Testament bears witness, in the form of Moses and Elijah, that He is the Messiah, and the voice of the Father declares Him to be the Son. Jesus was thus preparing his disciples so that they would not stumble at His suffering. He is the Son of God on the cross just as much as He will remain the Risen One in heavenly glory.
The summer celebration of the feast of Transfiguration is very much in keeping with the meaning of the feast. The blessing of grapes and other fruits and vegetables on this day is a symbol of the final transformation of things in Christ. It signifies the final flourishing and fruitfulness of the whole created world in the paradise of God’s everlasting kingdom, where all things will be transformed by the glory of the Lord.
MERGER: Week ago Sunday, at the Mass, I read the decrees concerning the Merger of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish with St. Emeric Parish. The documents from our diocesan Bishop Edward C. Malesic related to the merger of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish with St. Emeric Parish and the establishment of a shrine at St. Elizabeth Church have been posted to the bulletin board and on our website.
As it was announced several months ago, the difficult situation at St. Elizabeth necessitated and intensified the search for ways of saving St. Elizabeth and its Hungarian heritage for the long term. With the coincidental plan of a religious order seeking a place to minister in our diocese, it was possible to find the best solution to the current situation (not a perfect one which satisfies everyone, as that is impossible). In the merger, St. Elizabeth remains a part of the newly merged Hungarian parish and is elevated to a shrine. St. Emeric Church will retain its parish title. In the near future, a religious order will come and will assume the responsibility for the daily operations of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Shrine with certain privileges for Hungarian Catholics. The posted documents relate to the first phase of this transition. As further developments emerge, they will be posted here and announced at both churches during weekend Masses. Until further notice, the Mass schedule remains the same.
AUGUST SPECIAL ELECTION: Issue 1 asks voters if Ohio should “Require that any proposed amendment to the Constitution of the State of Ohio receive the approval of at least 60 percent of eligible voters on the proposed amendment.” Passing Issue 1 directly affects the issue of abortion in Ohio. Namely, the abortion lobby, with the current easy threshold of 50.01%, is presently attempting to enshrine abortion up until birth with zero restrictions in Ohio’s constitution this November. Thus passing the Issue 1 (voting YES on August 8, 2023) will help protect the most fundamental right of all – the right to life. Please, ensure you are registered to vote and verify your voting information before July 10, 2023 by going to VoteOhio.gov.

Mass of St. Stephen will be at 11:15AM, Picnic food from 12:30-4PM (Hungarian style sausage, stuffed cabbage, Hungarian gulyás, Tomato, pepper & onion stew (lecsó), lángos (elephant ear), cabbage & noodles, assorted pastries, coffee; children menu: hotdogs, chips, ice-cream cups). The traditional blessing of bread at 1PM, music throughout, dance presentation… No need to RSVP.
